Description: Identification of the Problem
Our newly established ambulatory surgery center has identified significant gaps in ophthalmology-specific competencies among perioperative nurses. Environmental challenges limit the opportunities to provide traditional orientation approaches that prepare nurses for the specialized skills required for ophthalmic surgical cases, potentially compromising patient safety and surgical outcomes.
To address this gap, we formed a multidisciplinary team consisting of perioperative leadership, nursing professional development specialists, ophthalmology surgeons, and experienced perioperative nurses. This collaborative approach ensured comprehensive expertise and realistic training scenarios that reflect actual practice settings.

Preparation and Planning
We developed an eight-week simulation program that integrates didactic education, hands-on simulation, and supervised clinical practice, concluding with several mock operating room cases with ophthalmology surgeons. The orientation content includes ophthalmic anatomy, instrumentation, procedural protocols, patient positioning, and emergency response specific to ophthalmology. The simulation scenarios emphasize critical thinking and clinical judgment during ophthalmic procedures.
