Overview/Abstract: Alpha Gal allergy is a new and emerging allergy. It is a reaction to products derived from mammals, which contains a protein known as Alpha Gal. Patients most often develop this allergy after being bitten by the Lone Star tick, and may not show symptoms for weeks afterwards. Many products in the perioperative setting are derived from animals. When caring for a patient who has an alpha gal allergy, it is essential to understand the allergy and its effect, as well as items within the perioperative setting that can act as triggers. This presentation will provide an overview of the alpha gal allergy, including etiology and effect on patients. The mechanism of reaction and reactions that can occur will be discussed. Products that can contain alpha gal will be discussed, and alternatives will be explored to assist perioperative nurses to ensure safe patient care.
