Description: The use of contaminated trays increases patient risk for infection and case delays. Increased surgical site infections could decrease optimal patient outcomes after surgery as well as increase the cost of care. Case delays decrease OR efficiency resulting in the inability to provide care to more patients in need. Case delays can also decrease patient and surgeon satisfaction due to increased wait times for surgical procedures. Collaborating with leaders from the Sterile Processing Department (SPD) is necessary to obtain significant decreases in contamination rates.
