Unit Educator in the Bell Operating Room

Lorie has worked at the University of Kansas health system, a level 1 trauma center, since 2016. She has been educator in a large trauma OR, for 7 1/2 years. Lorie is committted to mentoring and educating nurses and surgical technologists new to the operating room, preparing them to provide safe, evidence based care. Her passion for preventing retained surgical items (RSIs), led to the innovation of a prototype improving sponge counting efficiency, visibilty and prevention of associated patient harms.Her goals are to enhance patient safety and to support the surgical community through this innovation. Her dedication and persistence to this project is leading to improvements beneficial to the entire operating room community. She continues pursuing her dream using a collaborative, multifaceted approach that moves towards zero harm.
