Joao Manuel Vilaça Guimaraes, Anesthesia nurse
My name is João Manuel Vilaça Guimarães, and I have been a nurse at Pedro Hispano Hospital for approximately 25 years, where I began my professional career. At this institution, I played a fundamental role in providing medical care and supporting patients. During my first years at the hospital, I worked in different areas of nursing, gaining valuable experience in various fields. I spent about 3 years in the Medical Inpatient Service. Then, I joined the ICU, where I faced challenging situations and developed skills to deal with critically ill patients. I worked in this service for about 5 years. However, it was in the Surgical Center that I found my true passion and specialization. For 15 years, I worked as an anesthesiologist nurse, playing a crucial role in surgeries and medical procedures. My work in the Surgical Center was marked by ensuring the safety and well-being of patients, especially during the delicate moments of surgical interventions.
Currently, I am involved in research and investigation projects in partnership with the iHealth4Well-being research unit of the Polytechnic and University Higher Education Cooperative (CESPU) and the Research Service of the Matosinhos Local Health Unit. These projects focus primarily on intraoperative clinical safety and risk, with an emphasis on the study of Unintentional Retention of Surgical Items. Through these activities, I have witnessed the transformative power of science and data analysis to improve patient well-being and contribute to a more evidence-based clinical practice.
