1054 - PREPP for Success: Cultivating the Next Generation of Perioperative Leaders

Overview/Abstract: Strong leadership is essential for ensuring quality patient care and fostering a positive workplace culture. However, many nurses with leadership potential lack formal training in essential skills that prepare them for leadership roles. To bridge this gap, we developed a pilot program based on AONL’s leader competencies designed to equip clinical nurses and surgical technologist with the skills and experiences necessary to step into leadership positions confidently.

This presentation outlines the development, implementation, and outcomes of our Perioperative Readiness for Emerging Professionals Pilot program (PREPP). We will discuss how the program was structured to provide hands-on learning opportunities, mentorship, and interactive training in crucial leadership skills. Topics covered included effective communication strategies, navigating difficult conversations, financial accountability and fostering a leadership mindset. The curriculum was designed to help participants discover their leadership potential, build confidence, and develop the interpersonal skills needed to inspire and lead teams effectively.

We will share insights into participant selection, mentorship pairings, and the interactive workshops used to reinforce learning. Additionally, we will highlight key lessons learned, including successes, challenges, and future improvements. Attendees will gain practical strategies for implementing similar programs in their organizations and learn how investing in leadership development at the staff nurse level can strengthen the entire healthcare team.
