221 - Implementation of a Unit Practice Change Through Evidence-Based Practice

Description: A unit practice change was implemented in the Preoperative Holding Area related to intravenous insertion and blood collection for surgical patients. Nurses are accustomed to have only one highly experienced nurse and/or anesthesia to provide the service to surgical patients, which leads to lack of confidence to perform required task. Using the Kotter's Change Model, a team was formed which involved education and training and support to make the change. Thus, this created a huge impact on the improvement of the surgical first case on time starts, which is shown by the reported data. Also, it empowers unit nurses to provide the standard of care for the patients.
