Dr. Cheryl Ernst is from Albany, NY and currently practices at St. Peter's Hospital, a member of Trinity Health, as a surgical nurse practitioner since 2019. For 7 years prior, her advanced practice included internal medicine with a focus in general adult & pediatric preventative health, women's health, urgent care, and endocrinology health services. Previous nursing experience included neonatal care, women's health, urodynamics & pelvic floor rehabilitation, leadership and management, as well as adjunct faculty in nursing education.
She received her BSN from East Carolina University School of Nursing in 2002, her MSN (family nurse practitioner) from Sage Colleges in 2012, and completed her DNP from the Statue University of New York College of Nursing at Brockport in 2025. Her doctoral work was in Perioperative Glucose Monitoring and Treatment to Reduce Risk of Surgical Site Infections and Complications. This work went on to be published, presented at multiple conferences nationwide, and has been adopted by large health systems across the nation to improve monitoring and perioperative outcomes of patients as they relate to surgical stress. Her other noteworthy projects include establishing Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) and Prehabilitation programs across high-risk surgical specialties, implementation of a pre-splenectomy immunization protocol in hepatobiliary pancreatic surgery, and system implementation of postoperative RN-support calls as part of the several quality improvement initiatives implemented across the hospital system.
Dr. Ernst would like to thank her family, husband and two children for their constant support around her lifelong love of learning and passion for caring. In her free time, she enjoys doing most things involving creativity or involving nature, spending time with her adult children, and going on life's many adventures.
