Quality and Safety Consultant Infection Prevention
Kaiser Permanente
Los Angeles, California, United States
Donald Cabrera brings over three decades of comprehensive experience in operating room procedures and sterile processing and holds the CRCST, CIS, CHL, CFER certifications from HSPA. His extensive background in dynamic, technology-focused, and patient-centered healthcare environments has afforded him opportunities to serve in a wide range of roles, including technologist, coordinator, manager, educator, and infection prevention partner.
Currently, Donald serves as a Regional Sterilization and Disinfection Consultant, supporting medical centers and ambulatory departments across Southern California and Hawaii. In this role, he provides education, conducts facility audits, standardizes workflows, develops survey readiness tools, and offers expert guidance during regulatory and accreditation surveys. His consultancy also extends to organizations outside his primary affiliation, where he performs quality and reprocessing audits in support of contractual agreements.
Mr. Cabrera received his formal education and training through the Naval School of Health Sciences in San Diego, California, and Bethesda, Maryland, and proudly served in the United States Navy for eight years.
His dedication to surgical excellence and patient safety guided his career progression through various healthcare institutions, where he advanced from department administrator for sterile processing to lead consultant for sterilization and disinfection across a multi-facility region. Since 2016, he has continued his regional impact as a Quality and Safety Improvement Consultant within the Infection Prevention team.
In addition to his consulting work, Donald regularly presents at professional education events, including speaking engagements with regional chapters and associations, as well as ongoing seminars across Southern California.
Donald regards the Sterile Processing Department as the "heart of a modern hospital"—a critical hub without which operating rooms, nursing units, and ambulatory departments that rely on sterile instrumentation simply cannot function.
