Amanda Heitman, BSN, RN, CNOR, is a nursing leader with twenty five years in the profession, including two decades specializing in perioperative care. With sixteen years dedicated to surgical services education, she currently serves as a supervisor at WakeMed Cary Hospital, where she is an administrator and instructor for an AORN Periop 101 program, providing a specialized curriculum for RN residents and nurses new to the operating room, including valuable instruction in scrubbing techniques. In addition to her supervisory responsibilities, she remains an active clinical resource across multiple services and continues to participate in circulating and scrub roles, ensuring high standards of patient care. A lifetime member of AORN, Amanda diligently updates her knowledge of current guidelines and practice changes to educate others effectively. She is presently the chair of the Carolinas State Council where she has been able to advocate for surgical smoke safety and has been honored with a nomination to the national AORN Board of Directors. She is also the founder of Periop Anew, a company offering educational consulting focused on perioperative quality and safety for operating rooms. She shares her passion for perioperative education and safety by providing presentations for ambulatory surgery centers, infection prevention, and AORN event audiences, as well as webinars and podcasts highlighting the significance of dedicated perioperative educators and safety initiatives. Through her passion for perioperative nursing, she has strived to make a lasting impact on the quality of surgical care and safety towards the advancement of our profession.
