Ayumi is the Professional Practice Leader and Accredited Provider Program Director for Houston Methodist Hospital in the Texas Medical Center. She began her nursing career with an ADN and quickly advanced through BSN and MSN programs, ultimately earning her Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) from The University of Texas at Austin.
With a clinical foundation in intensive care, including neurosurgical, medical, surgical, and cardiovascular ICUs, Ayumi transitioned to the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU), where she deepened her expertise in perioperative nursing. Her passion for education and innovation led her to become a PACU educator, spearheading numerous quality improvement and evidence-based practice initiatives.
One of Ayumi’s most impactful contributions was the creation of the PACU Nursing Residency Transition to Practice Program in 2018. This pioneering program, which she developed and led through 2023, has been adopted across multiple hospital systems and recognized for its role in supporting new perioperative nurses.
A sought-after speaker, Ayumi has presented nationally and internationally on evidence-based practice, nursing education, and research. She actively contributes to the profession through her service on national committees focused on education, finance, and policy. Since 2019, she has co-chaired the Policy and Procedure Council at Houston Methodist’s flagship hospital. Her leadership and contributions have earned her numerous accolades, including Outstanding New Graduate Nurse, the Good Samaritan Award, and recognition as one of the Top 150 Houston Nurses by the Houston Chronicle’s Salute to Nurses.
