Clinical Nurse III
UCLA Health
My name is Debbie Phak, BSN, RN, CNOR. My professional journey began with an undergraduate degree in Psychology, where I developed a deep understanding of human behavior, emotional resilience, and the importance of mental well-being. These foundations ultimately guided me toward a more hands-on and holistic path: nursing.
I began my nursing career on a step-down unit at a community hospital, where I honed my clinical skills and developed a strong commitment to patient-centered care. While this role grounded me in the fundamentals of bedside nursing, I soon felt the pull toward a more fast-paced, technical, and team-driven environment, the operating room.
Over nearly five years at UCLA Santa Monica Medical Center, I’ve thrived in the dynamic operating room setting, contributing not only as a clinician but also as a collaborator and innovator. I serve as Interim Charge Nurse at a Level II Trauma Center. In this role, I strive to mentor others, foster teamwork, and maintain the highest standards of safety and patient outcomes. I also serve on the Structural Empowerment Collaborative Council as part of shared governance, helping shape policies and practices that empower nurses at every level. I’ve also been an active member of the UCLA Santa Monica Main OR Unit Practice Council, where I contributed to research initiatives and helped translate evidence-based practices into real-world improvements for our surgical team and patients. From psychology undergraduate to a perioperative nurse leader, I strive to lead a commitment to lifelong learning, interdisciplinary collaboration, and the pursuit of excellence in every aspect of patient care.
