Dr. Carole “Gert” Mayes has over 30 years of clinical experience as a circulator, scrub, manager, and educator. She has presented multiple poster presentations at the Association of PeriOperative Nursing’s Annual Global Surgical Expo and research findings as a podium presenter at regional, national, and international conferences. She published A Grounded Theory of Intraoperative Team Members’ Decision Making Regarding Surgical Attire Guideline Adherence (2020) and its follow-up study (2025) in the AORN Journal. She also published The Factors Influencing Perioperative Nurse Turnover: A Classic Grounded Theory Study in the AORN Journal (2023) and is conducting additional follow up studies on the topic. Currently, she serves on eChapter’s Board of Directors, as the Previous Chair of the Nurse Scientist Specialty Assembly of AORN, and as the secretary for the Sigma Theta Tau Omega Mu Chapter. Additionally, she is employed as the Clinical Educator at Rutland Regional Medical Center for Surgical Services including Sterile Processing and Endoscopy. Perioperative nursing and enhancing the evidence behind the nursing specialty and nursing in general continue to be her lifelong passions.
