Dr. Alphonzo Cortez Baker Sr. has 27 years of nursing knowledge, caring for adult and pediatric patients within PeriAnesthesia and critical care. His present role is a nurse leader as the Manager of the Prescreening/Preop/PACU unit for HCA Reston Ambulatory Surgery Center in Reston, Virginia. As a Past President, he served in the American Society for PeriAnesthesia Nurses (ASPAN). He has served as ASPAN’s Strategic Work Team (SWT) coordinator for Strategic Planning. ASPAN Board Liaison for Governmental Affairs SWT, Component Revitalization SWT, Executive Event Planning SWT., ASPAN Liasion for American Association for Men in Nursing (AAMN) National Nursing Task Force, National Nursing Community Coalition, and the American Association of Nurse Practitioners. He is an active ASPAN committee member for numerous ASPAN SWT’s. He served previously as ASPAN National Secretary and as the DC District President for CBSPAN. He is an instrumental change agent and an effective advocate for nursing practices. He has leadership skills, steering the Chairperson/Leader of PeriAnesthesia Collaborative Governance Council and Medstar Corporate Council Representative of Quality and Safety. He is involved with the American Nurses Association (ANA), as a delegate for governmental affairs for Northern Virginia. He is an American Organization of Nurse Leaders (AONL) member. He also serves on the Nurses Organization Alliance NOA board as President In his spare time, he enjoys traveling with his wife and family, loves to dance, and lives by his inspiration that we all should be in the presence of great energy, and when there is none, he ignites it. His research on developing training programs for perioperative/perianesthesia bundle educational fairs was presented at the AORN conference. He has been a presenter for ASPAN components and as a national conference speaker, keynote speaker, moderator, and host.
