She graduated from Ege University School of Nursing in 1987. She completed her master's degree in 1990 and her doctorate in 1998 at the Department of Surgical Nursing at Ege University, Institute of Nursing Health Sciences. She became associate professor in 2006 and professor in 2013 in the field of Surgical Nursing. She has been working at Ege University Faculty of Nursing since 1989.
She was one of the founders Turkish Operating Room Nurses Association in 1998. Between 2008 and 2012, she served as the president of the Turkish Surgical and Operating Room Nurses Association. She is one of Turkey Representatives for European Operating Room Nurses Association (EORNA) since the year 2011. She is secretary of International Federation of Perioperative Nurses (IFPN) 2022-2024. She is one of the founders Mediterranean Perioperatıve Nurses Community (MPNC)
Professor Dr. Meryem YAVUZ van GIERSBERGEN’s has articles in international and national journals, book and book chapters published in Turkey, proceedings in international and national congresses, organizing international and national congresses and meetings, Ph.D. and Master Theses completed at the Institute of Health Sciences. She has duties in graduate and postgraduate Nursing Education.
