The estimated cost for each minute of (OR) time ranges from $7 to more than $100, depending on the location, procedure, and surgeon. Therefore, time is of the essence; every strategy that can streamline processes and promote efficiency in delivering care is meaningful. As orthopedic procedures have become increasingly complex, standardization of surgical power tools and instrument sets has created opportunities to decrease processing time, staff training time, and capital investment costs. This educational session will describe types of surgical power tools, their safety implications for patients and OR personnel, and cleaning and sterilization considerations. Strategies will be suggested that can enhance efficiency during orthopedic surgical procedures while delivering quality care, improving outcomes, and reducing overall costs.
Learning Objectives:
Describe strategies to streamline sets of orthopedic power handpieces and attachments and thereby promote efficiency in the OR
Compare and contrast different types of orthopedic power tool handpieces, power sources, and attachments
Discuss safety considerations related to use of orthopedic power tools
Describe cleaning and sterilization guidelines for orthopedic power tools
