Surgical site infections are a common complication across all surgical specialties that lead to increased healthcare costs, morbidity, and mortality. Advanced wound closure techniques can be employed to prevent surgical site infections (SSIs), leading to improved outcomes and increased patient satisfaction. This continuing education activity presents an overview of the impact of SSIs, evidence-based recommendations on SSI prevention, and advanced wound closure techniques to reduce the incidence of SSI for perioperative professionals. Perioperative nurses and the other surgical team members need to be aware of advances in wound closure which aid in preventing surgical site infections.
