Perioperative departments continue to face persistent staffing challenges across both nursing and anesthesia, resulting in increased operational strain, staff burnout, and reduced patient access to surgical care. Traditional staffing approaches that are often manual, reactive, and can be fragmented across systems are no longer sufficient to meet the complexity and demand of modern surgical environments. This educational activity explores approaches to improve perioperative nursing and anesthesia staffing through proactive supply-and-demand matching that leverage evidence and data. Implementation considerations to support improved staffing approaches will also be discussed.
Learning Objectives:
Identify perioperative nursing and anesthesia staffing challenges driven by supply-and-demand imbalance
Discuss evidence-based best practices for perioperative staffing
Describe current staffing practices and how data-driven staffing approaches can support proactive supply-and-demand matching
Discuss implementation considerations required to sustain effective staffing alignment
