Description: This quality improvement project focuses on increasing compliance with double gloving practices in the operating room to enhance perioperative staff safety and patient protection. Double gloving is a best practice recommended by AORN and other surgical safety guidelines, yet adherence remains inconsistent. To better understand local practices, an anonymous survey was distributed across multiple surgical service lines to assess current compliance, identify perceived barriers, and gather staff-driven suggestions for improvement.
Initial findings revealed significant variability in double gloving habits. Barriers cited included poor glove fit, reduced tactile sensitivity, and a lack of consistent reinforcement or education. Based on the survey results, a targeted action plan was developed incorporating staff education, leadership engagement, improved glove sizing options, and visual reminders in high-traffic OR areas.
This project is currently in progress. The next phase involves implementing the action plan, followed by a repeat of the staff survey in November and the addition of observational audits to assess compliance and guide further interventions. This initiative reflects core QAPI principles by integrating frontline feedback, promoting evidence-based practice, and establishing mechanisms for continuous monitoring and improvement.
