Description: This is a literary analysis of the influence of the olfactory sense on daily actions and perceptions. Aromatherapy is known to have proven results in the treatment of anxiety, agitation, sleep disorders, and depression, and has recently shown promising results in the treatment of Alzheimer's (JIMBO et al., 2009).
Introduction: Work can take up a significant portion of each individual's time and social interactions. Studies have shown that work does not always enable professional fulfillment. On the contrary, it can cause problems ranging from dissatisfaction to exhaustion. The hospital environment is among the leading causes of mental illness among its workers, with burnout syndrome being the leading reason for absences among healthcare professionals. Given this reality, organizations are increasingly concerned with the quality of life, well-being, and physical and mental health of their employees, considering that their actions can impact the quality of care provided. The understanding that health is not merely the absence of disease has long been recognized, as it broadly incorporates the concept of well-being, both physical and mental. Numerous studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of aromatherapy in positively altering mood and reducing anxiety. Furthermore, it offers positive support for physical symptoms, also impacting quality of life, self-help, and well-being. (MACHADO 2011) In 2018, new practices were added to the National Policy for Integrative and Complementary Practices in the Unified Health System (SUS) through Ordinance No. 702 of March 21, 2018, encompassing the use of essential oils to promote and improve health and well-being (KARASEK et al., 2022). In mental health, aromatherapy provides emotional balance, tranquility, and mental clarity, reduces stress and anxiety, and raises the vibrational level of the environment, benefiting everyone within it. The introduction of aromas creates a welcoming atmosphere for healthcare professionals and patients, and can be used in workstations, wards, ICUs, and other spaces. The psychic effect of aromatherapy is due to the direct connection of olfactory receptors to the Central Nervous System, producing changes in brain chemistry (DAMIAN 2018). In 1920, scientist Royal Raymond Rife created equipment capable of measuring the frequency of substances in hertz. This made it possible to measure the human frequency of healthy individuals within a range of 62 to 68 megahertz (MHz). It was observed that in sick individuals, the frequency decreases to something below 62 MHz. Each essential oil has its vibrational pattern, and when it comes into contact with a human being, the activity of the information contained within it raises its frequency, balancing it in all its dimensions: physical, psychic, and spiritual (CLARK, 2000). Application: Introduction of an air vaporizer with scent in the nursing station.
Conclusion: Researchers are seeking new possibilities for the treatment and prevention of various diseases, many of which have multifactorial causes, such as emotional background and responses to environmental and endogenous agents. Therefore, natural therapies, especially aromatherapy, are options that can improve these aspects in a less invasive, comprehensive manner, and with their therapeutic potential.
